Radiant Black

This past weekend, I ran across a new comic series called Radiant Black. Radiant Black began in February 2021, and is a modern take on the superhero genre. The hero is a millennial, dealing with modern problems, and the story takes some inspiration from The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers which shouldn’t be surprising because the creator Kyle Higgins, had a very successful run on the Power Rangers comic series.

The book begins with our hero moving back in with his parents after running up a massive debt chasing his dream. After a night out on the town with an old friend, he discovers a mini black hole that gives him powers. Soon, he’s battling other people in similar suits and trying to juggle his regular life at the same time.

The book is smarty written and the art work is just phenomenal. I wasn’t a Power Ranger fan growing up, so I can’t really speak on any comparisons, but I have really enjoyed what I’ve read thus far (I’m up to book eight.)

The nice thing about Radiant Black is there isn’t decades worth of continuity to sort through. The book series just exists on its own, although that is changing in 2022 as some crossover style event comics are coming along with some spin-offs. I’m not really sure how I feel about this, but I am really enjoying the story thus far.

I also like that the creator has made a brand/community out of Radiant Black. There are podcasts, clothing, and limited run merch. A co-composer of The Walking Dead even has been scoring each issue. It really makes you feel like you are part of something and that is something unique and fun to this comic.

With all that being said, I don’t discover too many new comics this day that I’m just taken with, but Radiant Black is a very fun read. I’m looking forward to seeing where this story leads and think its worth a read for anyone looking for something superhero related without needing to reference Wikipedia.

Here is an excellent breakdown of what’s to come for Radiant Black in 2022.
