Social Media

Back in December, I stepped away from social media for a bit. I parked my Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts and uninstalled the apps. I like to do this from time-to-time because it helps me break the cycle of endlessly scrolling and opening up apps when I’m bored.

I meant to be offline for a week or so, but it’s been a month and I still haven’t been back online full-time. I did reinstall the apps last week, but I haven’t jumped back in and I don’t think I’m going to.

I don’t want this to come across like I’m on a high horse or full of privacy rage or anything like I have been in the past, but I just didn’t miss social media. I haven’t felt the need to share much and when I did pop back online I was a bit disgusted by what I saw. Between the ads and the stuff I didn’t care about was just people birching about this or that. They were doing the same thing I was doing, which was lashing out at things that didn’t really matter. As I scrolled through my feed, I realized that negativity isn’t really welcome in my life. Sadly, I can’t remove it just by removing one or two people, but the majority of people on my followers and that just makes this whole thing pointless.

I did have feelings of missing out the first few days when I logged off social media, but that soon passed. Since then I’ve read four books and started this blog. I stopped looking for so many answers online and started thinking for myself more. I’m never going to create a brand and I have nothing to promote. I don’t really have a need for social media in my life.

Over the past week, I removed some people from Instagram and tried adding some comedians and other positive people. The few times I opened Instagram and I still felt the same irritation and disappointment with the content that followed. I think I’m just over it.

So, I’ve decided to stick with this blog. This is where I’ll share myself to those who matter. If they choose to keep up with me through here great, if not, no biggie. I’ll just keep writing for myself and having fun.
