re: Who Knows You Blog

Blog Posts

JTR recently shared his thoughts on this question that has been making the rounds over the past few weeks, and I thought I'd share mine.

Its complicated when I think about it. I've been blogging for quite some time, and its come up to most of the people in my life that I'm close with (family and a few friends), but its not something that any of them follow. Sure, they've dabble with reading for a few weeks here and there, especially if I've been in a bad place, but I'm almost 100% confident that if you were to ask anyone in my life what my domain name or even blog title, they couldn't tell you. It's not something that gets asked about, and years ago it used to bother me that folks in my real life didn't bother to visit, but those days have long passed.

When I'm not writing about B-movies or foot insoles, I sometimes explore thoughts deep in the recesses of my mind. Blogging gives me the time and space to explore these ideas, and it can be really intimate. In those cases, I do wish my wife read my blog, because whenever I try to discuss the topic in person, I don't feel like I express myself the same way. Unfortunately, she views my blogging as a hobby, and being that I have no interest in doing Jazzercise (her hobby), I think it allows her to justify not reading my blog. And of course, there are semantics to argue there (time investment/cost etc) but again, I've moved on from worrying about all that.

I don't talk about my blogging at work, at least I haven't in many years. While I don't tend to write anything controversial, its just part of my life that I'm not interested in having critiqued. I've seen some scary Facebook stalking go on at work, so I'd prefer to just keep my personal thoughts and interests out of the hands of anyone I work with. I work in a professional environment, and often my co-workers have no idea what my interests are. It almost always comes as a shock when someone finds out that I'm into video games, comics, or sci-fi and I'm okay with that. I like the element of surprise. Of course, if for some strange reason someone did stumble upon my blog, I'm not worried about it.
