A Few Good ThingsBuddy List
I'm not on Bluesky, but if I was I'd totally use this page that turns your followers into an old school AIM Buddy list.
Usenet-Rewind
Usenet-Rewind is an easily searchable archive of old usenet posts. I was able to find some of my earliest internet conversations thanks to this page, including one where I was trying to dig up a copy of Evil Dead. Ha! I talked about my experience in trying to find this film in this post: Discovering Evil Dead in an AOL Chatroom.
Starship Troopers Anime
Over the past couple of years, I've really been enjoying Starship Troopers. What was once just a fun, 90s satire film has become a universe I adore to explore in video games and books. I felt like I had my finger on all that there was to Starship Troopers, but then the other day I ran across an anime from 1988. I haven't watched this six part series yet, but from my research it shares more in common with the 1997 Paul Verhoven film than the original book outside of actually featuring the power armor and drop pods.
This anime is very out of print but thankfully there are quite a few "remastered" copies on YouTube and Archive, so the one I linked may not be the very best for any anime junkies (I'm looking at your Jon.)
RJ Decker
I missed out on the whole USA Blue Skies era. I didn't have cable at the time, so I guess it just wasn't something that managed to sink it's hooks into me. Then six years ago, a friend of mine recommended Psych and the next thing I know I'm loving that, then Burn Notice, and now I'm finishing up White Collar and I'm having a blast with these light-hearted mystery shows set in a fun locations. They really are the perfect comfy watches.
Well, despite claims that the Blue Skies era will return, I haven't seen USA making any real moves towards it. Luckily, ABC has picked up the ball with shows like High Potential, Will Trent, and RJ Decker. Recently, I turned on RJ Decker just to see how it was and the next thing I knew I'd watched three episodes and downloaded the book the show was based on. I love the Florida setting and like the USA shows, the series is great about leaning into the characters. Scott Speedman is a great unshaven and a slight disaster PI, alongside Bevin Bru who plays his law enforcement connection and also the wife of his ex-wife. The always great Kevin Rankin leans into the Florida man steroetype so well and Jaina Lee Ortiz is the perfect love interest with a complicated past.
I recently discovered the show is filmed here in North Carolina, so that's always cool to see, although I think they do a great job of hiding it on screen. Most of the time, I can watch a movie or TV show and go, "Yea, thats North Carolina" but in this case, it really does feel like Florida.
Chickfila Chicken and Waffle Sandwich
I wouldn't call myself a fan of chicken and waffles. I mean, I like both of them, I just prefer them separately. But the other day, I ended up with a Chicken and Waffle Sandwich from Chickfila to try and well... it was INCREDIBLE. So much so, I went back the next day for another.
I don't tolerate Chickfila well these days, there is something in the oil that seems to aggervate my mouth, but this stupid sandwich has made me risk a day of irritation becuase they nailed the texture of the waffle bun, the sweetness of the butter and syrup.
Monstrous Musing: Chasing the High
This editoral by Phil Nobile Jr did a great job of putting into words that feeling that we sometimes have when nostalgia pushes us to try and recapture the same magic when we first experienced something. A worthwhile read.
