Halloween 2K26 - Roseanne Halloween Episodes
Halloween 🎃Every holiday season, I get nostalgic for ’90s television. I blame all those network programmers who spent years filling October with themed episodes, Halloween specials, and holiday programming blocks because they clearly got their hooks into me. Even now, it doesn’t really feel like Halloween until I’ve spent a few evenings revisiting some old sitcoms.
My recaps are pretty simple. I provide a spoiler-free synopsis, talk about how well the episode actually embraces Halloween, and then give it two grades: one for the strength of the Halloween theme and another for how likely I am to watch it again.
And when it comes to sitcoms celebrating Halloween, few shows ever did it better than Roseanne.
Roseanne is arguably my favorite sitcom of all time. I love the Conner family, their constant hijinks, and the way the show could find humor in the everyday frustrations of working-class life. I’ve watched almost the entire series several times, and I can still happily throw on just about any episode from the early and middle seasons and spend an hour or two hanging out in Lanford.
While most family sitcoms treated Christmas as the big annual holiday event, Roseanne went in the opposite direction. Christmas existed, but Halloween was the holiday when the show really came alive. The Conner house would be covered in decorations, elaborate costumes would appear, pranks would get increasingly ridiculous, and the entire family seemed to take Halloween almost as seriously as a religious observance.
The first season didn't feature a Halloween episode, but beginning with Season Two, Halloween became an annual tradition through the remainder of the original series.
So, let’s head to Lanford and revisit them.
Season Two, Episode Seven – “Boo!”
Original Air Date: October 31, 1989
Synopsis
Roseanne and Dan compete to see who can pull off the best Halloween prank while the Conners transform their home into an elaborate haunted house for the neighborhood.
Halloween Thoughts
I always forget just how good the very first Roseanne Halloween episode is. The Conner house is completely transformed into a homemade haunted attraction, with the entire family participating in scaring visitors. At the same time, Roseanne and Dan are engaged in their own private war to determine who deserves the title of Master of Horror.
This episode establishes virtually everything that would make the Roseanne Halloween shows so memorable: elaborate decorations, practical jokes, costumes, family chaos, and the feeling that Halloween isn't just happening in the background. It's the entire reason for the episode. And I still desperately want to walk through the Conners' haunted house.
This isn't just my favorite Roseanne Halloween episode. It's in the possibly my favorite sitcom Halloween episode ever.

Season Three, Episode Seven – “Trick or Treat”
Original Air Date: October 30, 1990
Synopsis
DJ decides he wants to dress as a witch for Halloween, which makes Dan uncomfortable. Meanwhile, Roseanne dresses as a bearded man and ends up stranded at the Lobo with Jackie, where she discovers what happens when the guys don't realize they're talking to Roseanne Conner.
Halloween Thoughts
Season Three nearly matches the previous year's episode. There are costumes everywhere, a wonderfully cheap haunted house at the Lodge, trick-or-treating, and enough Halloween atmosphere to fill several sitcom episodes.
I especially love the Lodge haunted house because it reminds me of the cheap little community haunted attractions I remember from childhood. Nothing looked convincing, but when you were eight years old and walking through a dark room while someone's dad jumped out wearing a rubber mask, it was terrifying.
Roseanne's subplot is just as entertaining. Watching her infiltrate the guys at the Lobo while disguised as a man gives the episode some of its biggest laughs. Most importantly, Halloween remains integral to the entire story rather than simply serving as window dressing.
Another classic.

Season Four, Episode Six – “Trick Me Up, Trick Me Down”

Synopsis
Roseanne and Dan kick off Halloween by pulling an elaborate prank on their uptight neighbor Kathy Bowman. When Kathy later appears at the Lodge's Halloween party, Roseanne becomes convinced that revenge is coming.
Halloween Thoughts
By this point, Roseanne had established Halloween as an annual event, and the writers wisely started leaning harder into the Conner family's obsession with pranks. Kathy Bowman is the perfect victim because almost everything about Halloween at the Conner house is designed to horrify her.
The prank that opens the episode is ridiculous, but that's part of the fun. Watching Roseanne become paranoid that Kathy is plotting revenge gives the rest of the episode its momentum. My only complaint is that Roseanne's paranoia begins to wear a little thin toward the end.
Fortunately, there's a great payoff involving a familiar face hiding underneath a costume.

Season Five, Episode Seven – “Halloween IV”
Original Air Date: October 27, 1992
Synopsis
Roseanne is depressed and doesn't feel like celebrating Halloween, so she's visited by the ghosts of Halloween Past, Present, and Future in an attempt to restore her holiday spirit.
Halloween Thoughts
Yep, it's A Christmas Carol with Halloween instead of Christmas. That's hardly an original concept, but somehow it works.
What makes the episode interesting is that it turns Roseanne's love of Halloween into part of her personal history. We get glimpses of Roseanne and Jackie as children, an absurd look at Roseanne's future, and plenty of jokes about just how seriously she takes the holiday.
I also love the idea that Roseanne being unable to enjoy Halloween is treated as such an unnatural occurrence that supernatural intervention becomes necessary.
The episode doesn't have quite the same cozy Halloween-party feeling as the earlier installments, but it's creative enough that I don't mind.

Season Six, Episode Six – “Halloween V”

Synopsis
Darlene plans to attend a college Halloween party with another guy despite still being with David. Roseanne feels sorry for David and encourages him to spend time with someone else, only to immediately regret that advice when another girl enters the picture.
Halloween Thoughts
This is where the Roseanne Halloween episodes begin to lose a little steam. There's still plenty of Halloween happening around the Conner house, and the family continues its annual tradition of elaborate pranks, but Halloween doesn't drive the story quite as much as it did in the earlier episodes.
Instead, most of the plot revolves around Darlene, David, and Roseanne becoming way too invested in their relationship. Thankfully, the pranks are still strong, and the mugger sequence is fantastic.
It's not one of the essential Roseanne Halloween episodes, but it's still an enjoyable installment and an easy addition to an October sitcom marathon.

Season Seven, Episode Six – “Skeleton in the Closet”

Synopsis
Leon hosts a Halloween party at the Lunch Box, and Roseanne becomes increasingly suspicious about Fred after discovering that he seems unusually comfortable around Leon and his friends.
Halloween Thoughts
The Halloween party at the Lunch Box provides plenty of costumes and decorations, and David attempting to explain homosexuality to DJ is one of those scenes that reminds me how well the younger cast could handle the show's dialogue.
The eventual payoff is also worth it. It doesn't reach the heights of the earliest Halloween episodes, but it's still a good one.

Season Eight, Episode Five – “Halloween: The Final Chapter”

Synopsis
A Ouija board predicts that Roseanne is about to have her baby, leading into an increasingly bizarre Halloween episode involving flashbacks, hallucinations, dancing hippies, and childbirth.
Halloween Thoughts
This is not a good Halloween episode.
By Season Eight, Roseanne had begun drifting away from the grounded family sitcom that made the earlier seasons so good, and “Halloween: The Final Chapter” is a pretty good example of that transition.
The episode starts with a promising setup involving a Ouija board, but then everything gets progressively stranger. By the end, we're dealing with psychedelic sequences, childbirth, and callbacks to previous Halloween episodes.
The flashbacks are nice because they remind you how good these episodes used to be. Unfortunately, they also remind you how good these episodes used to be.
There's enough Halloween imagery to technically qualify, but I rarely feel the urge to revisit this one.

Season Nine, Episode Seven – “Satan, Darling”
Original Air Date: October 29, 1996
Synopsis
Roseanne and Jackie attend an extravagant Halloween party in New York City, where they cross paths with characters played by Absolutely Fabulous stars Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley.
Halloween Thoughts
Okay. Season Nine. My original write-up skipped this episode altogether, but if I'm putting together a complete guide to the Roseanne Halloween episodes, I suppose we have to acknowledge “Satan, Darling.”
Technically, this is a Halloween episode. There are costumes, a lavish party, celebrity guest stars, and plenty of Halloween imagery. The problem is it doesn't feel like Roseanne.
By this point, the working-class Lanford sitcom about a family struggling to pay its bills had become a surreal playground where Roseanne could wander into increasingly bizarre situations. “Satan, Darling” feels more like a strange crossover experiment than an episode involving the Conner family celebrating Halloween.
There are some fun visuals and the Absolutely Fabulous appearances give it curiosity value, but compared with Roseanne and Dan scaring neighborhood kids inside their homemade haunted house just seven years earlier, it feels like we've entered another television series entirely.
Which, in Season Nine, wasn't exactly unusual.

What separates Roseanne from most sitcoms that produced Halloween episodes is that Halloween actually mattered to these characters.
For the Conners, it wasn't merely an excuse for the wardrobe department to put everyone in costumes for twenty-two minutes. They decorated their house, built haunted attractions, threw parties, and tried to traumatize one another with increasingly elaborate practical jokes.
The later episodes never quite recaptured the magic of those first few years, but when Roseanne was at its best, the Halloween episodes made Lanford look like exactly the sort of place I wanted to be on October 31st.
If you're only going to watch one, make it “Boo!” Then you'll probably end up watching the next three anyway.
